Diabetes for Dummies
by Alan L. Rubin M.D.
Getting a diagnosis of diabetes
can be a terrible shock. Even when the shock has worn off
and you begin to come to terms with the fact that you have
a serious and chronic illness, there are only so many questions
that you can ask your doctor. The problem is that there
are numerous things you need to know. In fact, without more
information, you can feel that you don't even know the questions
you need to ask.
This book, Diabetes for
Dummies, is an excellent place to start. It answers
all those basic questions that crowd into your head in the
days after the initial diagnosis. Here are a sample of chapters
from the early pages:
- How diabetes affects your
body
- Dealing with the diagnosis
- Getting to know your diabetes
- Moving on: maintaining
a high quality of life
Better still, the book contains
so much information on type 1 and type 2 diabetes that it
will remain a constant reference well after you have become
familiar with diabetes and it effects.
Amongst other topics, it
deals with:
- short-term and long-term
complications like kidney and heart disease
- sexual function
- pregnancy and diabetes
- exercise and why it is
essential
- medication and how the
different types work
- children with diabetes
- the elderly with diabetes
These are just a few of the
subjects in the book. There is also a useful mini cookbook,
a list of food exchanges and diabetes web resources.
If you or a family member
have just been diagnosed with diabetes or even if you have
had a the disease for a while and want a good book on the
subject, I can recommend this one without reservation. It
is well written and even more difficult aspects are made
easy to understand. Even if you never buy another book on
the subject, get this one.
