Many
people who have diabetes have known about the Glycaemic
Index (GI) for years and have used it to help control their
blood sugar levels. The basic premise is that different
foods take longer than others to digest and break down into
glucose (the substance transported around the body in the
blood stream for use by the body).
Dr David
Jenkins, a professor at the University of Toronto in Canada,
set out to find which foods were most suitable for diabetics
and in the process developed the Glycaemic Index.
Taking pure
glucose, which enters the blood stream very quickly, as
a reference with a GI of 100, all other foods are ranked
from 1 to 100. The lower the GI, the longer it takes for
the food to be digested and affect blood sugar levels.
This new
book, Easy GI Diet, clearly explains in layman's
terms the theory behind the Glycaemic Index and the health
benefits of eating low GI foods. It explains the GI facts
of different types of food like carbohydrates, fruit and
vegetables, protein, fats and drinks. There are helpful
boxes showing foods in order of their GI so you can see
at a glance whether they are 'good' or 'bad'.
As well as
other health benefits, the book explains how using the Glycaemic
Index can help you to lose weight without resorting to fad
diets and, even better, how it can help you to keep the
weight off once you have lost it. There are helpful eating
plans with recipes, all calorie counted, including one called
'GI Indulgences' with suggestions for low GI and low calorie
snacks. There is another called 'Vegetarian Weight-Loss
Plan', with suggestions and recipes for vegetarians. Finally,
at the back of the book, there is a chart showing the GI
of many foods so you can check even if the food is not mentioned
in the rest of the book.
Easy
GI Diet isn't just another fashionable diet, nor does
it encourage odd eating habits, excluding whole food groups.
This book gives enough information, clearly written in an
interesting way, to enable the reader to use it to lose
weight, keep it off and follow a healthy eating plan for
life.
