Losing Weight with Weight Watchers UK Online - How Does it Work?

Weight Watchers®. Now with an online plan.

There are a number of companies that offer online help to lose weight. Amongst these is the long established Weight Watchers®, which built its reputation, both in the UK and USA, with local support groups for slimmers. Many people found that the Weight Watchers dieting system and support from other dieters meant they lost a substantial amount of weight, sometimes after many years of trying and failing.

Weight Watchers first began in America in 1963 and was introduced to the UK in September 1967. Since then, Weight Watchers International has helped more than 30 million people successfully lose weight worldwide. Its programme is a safe, sensible weight loss plan designed to be fun and easy to follow. Nearly 7000 Weight Watchers Meetings are held each week in over 3,000 locations throughout England, Scotland & Wales. The emphasis is very much on losing weight slowly so avoiding yo-yo dieting.

So how well does this translate to dieting and getting Weight Watchers support via the internet and what can you expect if you sign up?

Get Your Free Personal Assessment and lose weight the healthy way with Weight Watchers®.

When you make the decision to join Weight Watchers online, you begin with the registration process including, of course, payment by credit or debit card. In addition to the usual information like name, date of birth and address, you also have to give your height and weight. You also click on the box that most accurately describes the amount of exercise you take each day. This allows Weight Watchers to tell you how many points you can eat in a day.

Weight Watchers allocate points to food and you count these rather than calories. They have useful online guides to the points of each kind of food as well as their own recipes. There is also very good Recipe Builder; using this, you enter the ingredients for your favourite dishes, complete with instructions, and get the count for them.

There is a No Count list of foods from which you can eat freely and a Portion Planner helping you to correctly quantify a portion—it is so easy to make a mistake when trying to assess this.

One of the key parts of the site is the Weight Watchers Habit Audit. Sometimes excess weight can be attributed to habits that we've picked up over the years, sometimes in childhood. Taking the Habit Audit and then looking at the chart that assesses your answers gives you an indication of the kind of habits you need to change, for example, you might comfort eat or hate to see food wasted so eat leftovers. If you can't break the bad eating habits that caused weight gain, you will put back any weight you lose on a diet.

Weight Watchers also gives you a weight goal and an online chart where you can record your weight every week so you can see the progress you are making towards your target weight.

Along with these tools to losing weight, there are all kinds of support and encouragement. There's a Motivate Me section with ideas and suggestions for keeping to your diet, articles on many aspects of dieting and an active forum where you can share your success and difficulties.

Although Weight Watchers®, has made its name with its groups, it has successfully adapted its programme into an online experience providing good tools and support for anybody who want to lose weight and, just as important, keep it off.
